Iwa Masonry Area
This neighborhood is an area called a rock area in Manazuru-town.
They are the heights of lava through which it flowed by the volc anic activity of about 220,000 ～ 180,000 years ago.
It has prospered as a town of masonry for many years using this lava.
It is a place which can see the cli ?o f lava, the sectioonf a cinder cone, and the historied stonework .
Stonework of Iwa Masonry Area
The Hokyointo was constructed in 1767. It was constructed with the contributions of the villagers. The stone used for Hokyointo was Shin-Komatsuishi, which is softer than Hon-Komatsuishi. Additionally, detailed workmanship decorates the Hokyointo.
Five Layer Tower (Gosoto)
Long ago, there was a temple in the Iwa Area called “Ganshozan-Kosai-ji”. The Gosoto is a stone structure, proving that the temple existed. It was made from a single stone in 1654. From the Gosoto, it can be understood that the skill level of stone working at that time was high.
Iwa Coast（Cli? of Lave）
The coastal cliffs (wave erosion) are sediments from the Iwa lava group.
The cinder cone (pyroclastic cone) that was formed by an explosive eruption was covered by lava that flowed later. Because of being covered by lava, the iron content of the coastal cliffs oxidized and turned red. In the lava that covered the cinder cone, cracks (joints) and stripes (line structures) that were formed as it cooled can be seen.

They are the cracks formed when lava shrinks as it cools and solidifies.

This is the striped pattern made when 2 different types of lava were mixed and cools.
Nyorai－ji temple（Section of Cinder Cone）
This cave was formed by hollowing out a cinder cone (pyroclastic cone). It is a rare location where you can look inside and see lava which has oxidized and turned red. It is thought that this cave was a naturally made hole that people further dug later on.
