History of the Odawara Irrigation Channels

The Odawara Irrigation Channels were built to provide drinking water to the residents of the castle town of Odawara in the days of the Odawara Hojo c lan.

The canals ran from the intake point at Hakone-Itabashi through the town of  Odawara, then flowed outside the castle to the Hamacho district, which is the site of a historical gate on the road to Edo (modern-day Tokyo).

The canals made use of natural slopes and the topographic gradient to carry water across the alluvial lowlands of Odawara.oday the Odawara Cana ls still flow into the moat of Odawara Castle.
