A shrine built at the terminal cliff of the lava flow of Komagatake

Hakone has a rugged topography and it attracted many practicing monks who wished to visit the famously worshipped mountains. Mangan Shonin was among those who made their pilgrimage to Hakone, and erected the Hakone-jinja Shrine in 757 when he received a divine message.
Mt.Komagatake is a stratovolcano that has been active since approximately 27,000 years ago.
With close observation it is possible to see that there are many layers of lava flows from near the summit. The stairs to the main hall of the shrine was built on a steep slope, which is on the cliff at the edge of the lava flow, and so the building of the main hall actually stands above the lava flow.
